West Point Trip
Thursday through Sunday, April 16-19 - OCIN took five brave and excited young orienteers to the U.S. Interscholastic Orienteering Championships at West Point, N.Y. They competed as a club junior varsity team finishing in 3rd place. There were 9 in our group; 5 adults and 4 teens. The team went to Harriman State Park to get an understanding of the terrain, the maps, and to gain some knowledge in how to navigate in this unfamiliar landscape. The juniors later listened to the U.S. Team Coach, Mike Waddington as he shared some anecdotes and advice to an awed audience. Guy Olsen joined us for the remainder of the Friday afternoon as we toured Washington Irving’s home in Tarrytown, as well as many other sights and enjoyed a delightful dinner at Grandma’s Pie’s. Katie Williams suffered an ankle sprain Saturday morning ending her competitive involvement for the weekend. The rest of the group continued their school of rock and were well churched by Sunday night.
