Rothenburg ob der Tauber
April 26 &27, Saturday & Sunday - From Würzburg we drove south on the Romantic Road (Romantische Straße). We arrived at a small town situated on a plateau over looking the Tauber River, Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It is a walled and towered medieval village beautifully restored. Founded in the 10th century, in 1274 it was accorded privileges by the king as an imperial city. During the 30 years war, in 1631, a Catholic force of 40,000 briefly took the town from the Lutherans. Three years later it was devastated by the Black Plague. Consequentially, Rothenburg was preserved in its 17th century state. Although damaged, WWII spared it from total destruction.
