Avignon

Avignon was settled on the rocky outcrop overlooking the Rhône River by the pre-Roman Celts. By the 12th century it was an independent republic, later crushed in 1226 during the Cathar heresy. At the beginning of the fourteenth century it was of no great importance. But it underwent a wonderful development between 1309 and 1377 when seven Avignon popes and two anti-popes called it the seat of the Papacy instead of Rome.
