A rocky outcrop crowned with a ruined castle overlooking the plains to the south has existed as early as the 10th century. Conflicts, revolts, sieges, and wars led to a prosperous time during the 16th century, which saw great architectural development in the castle and many private mansions. It was finally destroyed in 1632 at the demand of Cardinal Richelieu.
